~ Chapter 7: The unexpected freeloader ~
A sudden attack throws Cody into chaos and places a wounded Mercya in his care. With the city turning against her and Sarquass controlling the narrative, Cody must decide whether to stay out of it—or protect someone the world now calls a traitor.
~ Chapter 6: Just a bit of her true strength ~
What begins as a search for safety becomes a brutal lesson in power. As danger closes in from every side, Alseus watches Kleya tear through the enemy with ease—and realizes he may have summoned something far more fearsome than expected.
~ Chapter 5: Pirates are not mermiads? ~
When someone told me about pirates, I only thought about a bunch of pseudo-mermaids who stole treasures from passing boats, whose sailors they mesmerized with their song magic. They were annoying at best, but far from what I would call a reason to panic. All you had to do to counter them was to put in some earplugs and then have a mallet at hand. Smack them in the head the moment they tried to jump on board and then they fell back into the sea with a funny splosh!
~ Chapter 6: Villainesses and Heroines ~
Two days later, while I was sitting in my class and letting out a big yawn, I got an unexpected message that woke me up from my sleepy state.
Mercya: Hello, are you open today? I have something that needs fixing. It’s erm... a hand. [Picture]
~ Chapter 5: Connections and Contracts ~
My little shopping spree cost me no more than $8,520. It hurt to see the sum vanishing from my account like that, but I was happy. I was certain I had not wasted my money; on the contrary, I was investing it in my future as well as a newly established connection with the woman named Tina, who was exactly what I was looking for! She was a treasure trove in the form of a mountain of broken devices and abandoned tech, which I could acquire at a fraction of their production cost. Each of them was like a gift of knowledge that not even the top universities on this planet could offer me.
~ Chapter 4: Akraella the Cruel ~
In my previous world, the demonkind were blessed with a powerful Magic Core they could use to cast powerful spells. Demon Kings were special among all demonkind. They were gifted with an immense Magic Core that turned them into living weapons. Wide-area destruction was always left behind when we engaged in battle; as such, we never needed to summon powerful creatures in battle.
It was not as if we lacked the knowledge to do it. No, the problem was that the summons were… energy hungry. These abominable creatures required a huge amount of Magic Energy to be called into this world, and depending on the type they were, some of them actually needed to be fed constantly.
~ Chapter 3: The Crown Sword of the Seas ~
Demon Kings did not go on cruises or take vacations. My past life’s whole repertoire of entertainment activities included reading in the library, reading reports, and the occasional long-distance espionage of the human settlements around the border of the demon territory. The last part could be counted as work too, but it was the fun part of work.
Combat was not fun for me. It was work. Military activities were also not fun for me; they were work. I did not really enjoy fighting or flaunting my power as much as the previous Demon King did, but when it came down to it… I was merciless.
~ Chapter 2: Is this another world? ~
By the time I reached the age of three, I understood what was happening to this world, why there were so many weird magics around.
In a few words: this was a different world from the one in which I was a Demon King.
Initially, I concluded that mankind managed to evolve their spells and technology way beyond what my scouts had discovered in my past life as a direct result of demonkind getting weaker without me. If it was not this, then one of the gods intervened directly and elevated their technology because they had nothing better to do or wished to change the playground on which demonkind was butchered.
~ Chapter 4: Upgrades ~
Yesterday, I was just a normal human in an inhuman world, and now... it seems I’ve joined it as well.
With the money I had in my bank account now, I could cover all of my student loans, and inside my contact list, there was one in particular who could make headlines wherever I went. I had a direct line to one of the most powerful heroines on this planet.
~ Chapter 1: A New Body, a New Life ~
A warm embrace, constant care and protection were my new environment. The humans around me took care of my every need. The moment this disgustingly weak body of mine let out a cry, someone came over and fed me or wiped my bottom.
Sometimes, I ate from a bottle and other times from the breasts of my mother. As her baby, I felt no shame, just the need for food and the warm protective embrace she held me in. Her voice comforted me and made me fall asleep with ease.
~ Prologue ~
We never asked to be created. We never begged for the gift of life, yet… we were generously offered the power to take it from others.
When we opened our eyes, we were told to kill… to hunt… to die… and to be hunted down.
We were animals…
We were prey…
We still dreamed… a dream that lacked hope and desire… a simple one…
~ Chapter 3: The First Job ~
So, in this world, where superpowers, aliens, and supernatural abilities were common, there were those who excelled in them by a great margin. It mattered not if you were psychic when the only thing you could do was read one mind once a day. Or if you were a supernatural, and the most you could do was pop up some animal ears and have better hearing than most. It was like having one extra trick to show off at a party, and that was it.
~ Chapter 2: Awakening the System ~
With a groan escaping my lips, and a sense of stiffness spreading through my body, I opened my eyes and found myself staring at an unknown rooftop. There were cracks, a bit of mold and even a water leak spreading across the ancient paint. Turning my head, I saw a stash of garbage neatly piled up in bags and cardboard boxes that have seen the foundation of this city, and a simple table made out of wood with a single wood chair under it. It looked new and at the same time like it was handmade by a caveman.
~ Chapter 1: System ~
Reborn as the child of an average family in a little place called Broken Bow in Nebraska, I grew up in the most normal way possible without ever revealing my past life memories. It was not as though I was afraid or scared of this but rather that if I faked being a genius, it would end up biting me in the ass later on. This was the States, not good ol’ Europe.
~ Prologue ~
The 1st of January 2027, the start of a new year, the beginning of new promises, new hopes, new dreams.
Just like many others, I too believed that I would finally have the chance to turn my life around yet... here I was... hanging on for dear life by a piece of broken rebar sticking out of the cracked pavement of the Golden Gate Bridge. My left arm was limp, broken and my right leg was pulsing with pain, my vision was blurry, and my breathing was heavy. Another piece of rebar was sticking out of my stomach.
~ Chapter 33: A better man
Back on Earth and even here on Planet 9, I made a mistake, a terrible mistake that for as long as I would live, I did not want to repeat again. I had to step out of my fairy tale ideal and jump right into the real world outside, where my naïve wishes only ended up hurting me and those who cared about me.
As soon as I woke up, I went to the bathroom and took a shower. Water and electricity were still running in this place. A good sign which told us that the underground infrastructure of pipes, cables, and maintenance systems was still up and running.
~ Chapter 32: We all have a choice to make
The Resonance High School was quiet after the bloody battle in the Atrium. It was as if none of the survivors wanted to even so much as dare to peek out of their hiding holes and look at us. As my gaze fell down on the bodies of the dead, I realized that there was no way for there to be any innocents left in this place. Each and every one of them had gotten a taste for human meat, they ate their fellow students or teachers, they were no different than the monsters walking outside of this place, hunting for survivors.
Nataly didn’t go chasing after the ones who fled from the scene, she stayed behind and began to check the bodies for supplies.
“They have no credit cards on them!” she grumbled in frustration as she kicked one of the bodies in the side.
~ Chapter 31: Killing my naivety
When we stepped into the Atrium, it felt empty, devoid of all life, but Xerya’s scans that appeared on my retina showed that there were human lifeforms all around us. For the sake of keeping up appearances, we pretended not to see and not to know.
“This place looks empty.” Nataly played along as she gave a kick to a cardboard box near the fountain in the middle.
“This is unexpected... We were told that this was a camp of survivors, right?” I asked her, pretending to be a fool.
~ Chapter 30: The seed of corruption
The world went to Hell... and with it... so did human laws and decency.
When the outbreak started, we were all just a bunch of senior year High School students. Our main worry was to get back home, drop off our stuff and then head out to play. I was thinking about getting my first cyber implant and even a flyer. My dad promised me one, but that day, when we left home, we never expected even in a million years that for some of us it would be the last time we would see our families alive and well.
~ Chapter 29: Signs of despair
The whole school was a mess. The windows at the ground floor were barricaded with school desks and other pieces of furniture, most likely nailed or glued to the walls with something. There were traces of blood all over the place: on the walls, on the windows, on the ground and even on the trees that were planted in the courtyard.
Despite all of this, I could still remember like it was yesterday the peaceful times when everyone looked forward to their promising future on this planet. During class time, the neighborhood cat sometimes came around and napped near the gate. During breaks, the students were laughing innocently in their own little groups gathered around the benches. On the other side, in the grass, there was always a group of kids playing ball, while not far from them, near the big tall tree, the robot enthusiasts could usually be found discussing ideas and plans focused around their hobby. Up on the rooftop was usually a place where those in the third years would always gather to eat lunch.
